MIRI – The teenager who ran amok in a kindergarten while under the influence of drugs shows how serious the addiction problem is in Sarawak now, a state minister said.
State Women, Childhood and Community Wellbeing Minister Datuk Seri Fatimah Abdullah was commenting on the incident that took place at a kindergarten in Sarikei two weeks ago.
“This incident is something very serious. It shows that drug problems in Sarawak are affecting even the young.
“I call on all community leaders to view this problem very seriously and take remedial measures in their respective areas,” Fatimah said at a public event in Sarikei town.
On June 14, police in Sarikei district arrested a 17-year-old boy for running amok and damaging property in a kindergarten during schooling hours.
Police acted following reports and video footage on social media that showed the boy on a rampage.
Sarikei police chief Awang Arfian Awang Bujang said the case was classified under Section 427 and 323 of the Penal Code, which pertains to damaging property and threats to harm people.
In the incident, one of the kindergarten teachers had bravely shielded pupils to prevent the suspect from approaching them.
The state government is considering a bravery award for the teacher, who reportedly suffered injuries to her hands, leg and back. – The Vibes, June 27, 2023
